Post-pregnancy tissue changes promote breast tumor metastasis

Changes in the tissue environment of the breast that occur after pregnancy promote the metastasis of breast tumor cells, researchers report.

This work also highlights an important shift in thinking about what influences cancers to metastasize, moving from studying specific gene mutations to studying the tumor environment.

The paper by first author S.M. McDaniel and colleagues, led by Pepper Schedin, AMC Cancer Research Center of University of Colorado Health Science Center, appeared in the February 2006 issue of the American Journal of Pathology and is accompanied by a commentary.
