Protein found to control tumor growth in certain breast cancers

Scripps Research Institute scientists report finding that the Nod1 protein controls tumor growth in certain breast cancers. The unexpected discovery may help spark search for new treatments. This protein was previously thought to play a role solely in the innate immune system's response to bacterial infection. In the new study, published online January 23, 2006, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers showed for the first time that Nod1, which is present in epithelial cells of the intestinal tract and lungs, is linked to the control of malignant cell growth.
