Recent findings illuminate research in cancer risk factors

Investigators in the United States and Sweden have published new cancer risk factors data.

Study 1: BRCA1 deficiency may be linked to aberrant estrogen biosynthesis which is associated with specific cancer risks.

"Mutations in BRCA1 increase risks of familial breast and ovarian cancers, particularly among premenopausal women. While BRCA1 plays an active role in DNA repair, this function alone may not be sufficient to explain why BRCA1-associated tumors predominantly occur in estrogen-responsive tissues," investigators from the University of Virginia report.
