Estrogen therapy does not protect postmenopausal women from heart disease

Estrogen therapy does not appear to reduce the risk of heart attack or coronary death in healthy postmenopausal women, although some data suggest a lower coronary heart disease risk in women aged 50 to 59 years, according to an analysis of data from the Women's Health Initiative. The study appeared in the February 13, 2006, issue of Archives of Internal Medicine (Arch Intern Med, 2006;166:357-365). The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) included two large clinical trials that evaluated whether hormone therapy with estrogen reduces the risk of coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women.
