Cervical cancer screening is less likely to be recent among women in high-poverty neighborhoods.

Among black women, residence in high-poverty neighborhoods is associated with an increased risk of nonrecent cervical carcinoma screening. According to an article written by investigators at Harvard University, "Cervical carcinoma is the fifth most common cancer among African American women in the U.S. Although the Papanicolaou (Pap) smear is an efficacious screening tool in the early detection of the disease, disparities are known to persist in the utilization of this procedure across socioeconomic groups."
