According to recent research from Calgary, Canada, "To evaluate the relationship among gestational age at elective cesarean delivery, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission, and whether the presence of pre-cesarean delivery labor or ruptured membranes affected the incidence of neonatal respiratory distress. A chart review was performed of all elective caesarean deliveries (documented planned in advance) during 1 year, 2004-2005, in the Calgary Health Region; resulting in liveborn infants at or after 36 weeks of gestation and birth weight equal to or greater than 2,500 g. The primary outcomes are relative risk of NICU admission or respiratory distress."
