"CDKNIC ( also known as p57(KIP2)) is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor previously implicated in several types of human cancer. Its family members ( CDKNIA/ p21(CIPI) and B/ p27(KIPI)) have been implicated in breast cancer, but information about CDKNIC's role is limited," scientists in the United States report. "We hypothesized that decreased CDKNIC may be involved in human breast carcinogenesis in vivo. We determined rates of allele imbalance or loss of heterozygosity ( AI/LOH) in CDKNIC, using an intronic polymorphism, and in the surrounding II p15.5 region in 82 breast cancers.
