Peptidoglycan not associated with sensing of bacteria by toll-like receptor 2

December 14th, 2004

Investigators from France have reported that the sensing of bacteria that occurs via the toll-like receptor 2 does not involve the detection of the bacterial peptidoglycan.

"Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 has been shown to recognize several classes of pathogen-associated molecular patterns including peptidoglycan (PG). However, studies linking PG with TLR2 recognition have relied mainly on the use of commercial Staphylococcus aureus PG and have not addressed TLR2 recognition of other PG types," wrote L.H. Travassos and colleagues, Institute Pasteur, Unite Pathogenie Bacterienne Muqueuses, Paris.

Instead, the researchers used highly purified PGs...
