New radiation therapy method may enhance breast cancer survival rates

Intraoperative radiation treatment (IORT), the direct application of radiation to the tumor or tumor bed during surgery for breast cancer, can improve local control and survival rates because it starts therapy when residual tumor cells are most active. Developed by Intraop Medical Corp., the Mobetron is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved machine that delivers intraoperative radiation therapy in a regular operating room. IORT is believed to be an effective treatment to improve cancer survival rates because a single 2-minute treatment can often eliminate several weeks of conventional pre- or post-operative external beam radiation therapy. ...
