Prison system's spiraling healthcare costs examined

California Department of Corrections (CDC) contracts with a Beverly Hills dermatologist and a La Jolla orthopedist are just two examples why inmate health care costs are spiraling out of control even as the state considers cutting medical benefits for law-abiding citizens, state lawmakers said.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is counting on prison cost cutbacks to help pare his budget, yet only within the last year have prison officials begun coordinating contracts and searching for inefficiencies.
