Molecular assay detects RSV, influenza, and parainfluenza viruses

A novel polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay can quickly and accurately detect a number of respiratory viruses.

"Laboratory diagnosis of viral respiratory infections is generally performed by virus isolation in cell culture and immunofluorescent assays," scientists in the Netherlands explained. "Reverse transcriptase PCR is now recognized as a sensitive and specific alternative for detection of respiratory RNA viruses."
