ABBOTT PARK, Ill. May 5, 2008 -- Abbott today announced the launch of ExtenD, a new nvestigator-initiated research program created to support research in advancing the understanding of vitamin D receptor activators (VDRA). Currently, VDRA therapy is used to control parathyroid hormone (PTH) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Toxic levels of PTH cause mineral imbalance that may lead to bone disease and has been associated with cardiovascular disease. Recent findings from several large observational studies have suggested that the benefits of VDRAs are broad and extend beyond PTH regulation.
What: Abbott is currently accepting research proposals for ExtenD to explore additional therapeutic benefits of VDRA in areas including cardiovascular disease, cardiac and vascular function, metabolism disorders, inflammation, and chronic kidney disease progression.
When: Deadline for proposal submission is June 30, 2008.
How to Apply: For application forms and submission guidelines, visit www.theCKD.org/ExtenD or email ExtenD@theCKD.org. Proposals will be evaluated by the ExtenD committee comprising internationally renown experts in nephrology, endocrinology, cardiology, basic science and vascular biology. Proposal selection will be based on scientific merit, the proposal's novelty, the capability of the investigator's laboratory, and the impact on the VDRA field.
