Winston-Salem, N.C.—April 15, 2008—In the public eye, people often view the doctor as having all the power in the doctor-patient duo. However, Dr. Steven Feldman is trying to level the playing field between patient and practitioner, providing an arena where patient feedback is key to doctors improving their practices.
In a recent peer-reviewed article appearing in the February 2008 Dermatology Times, Feldman explains how his service DrScore.com, allows doctors to get detailed feedback from patients about every aspect of their practice. “Our Web site was created with the idea that doctors and patients share common goals and that physicians, in general, do a great job and certainly try to do their best in caring for patients,” Feldman says. “However, it is also important for physicians to try to establish strong patient relationships and receive honest feedback from patients to see how they are perceived.”
Patients can leave detailed feedback on the DrScore survey, developed collaboratively with patient-satisfaction scientist Dr. Richard Anderson, which gather information from both sliding-scale responses and open-ended questions. From the 45,000 participants so far, doctors definitely can see that clients base their satisfaction on the entire office experience, not just the moment of diagnosis.
“The response of the participants indicated that satisfaction was not merely tied to whether or not patients found the provider friendly, but was more directly related to practice aspects and personal traits that are considered fundamental to enabling patient self-management of health,” Feldman said in the article. “These results suggest that in order to increase patient satisfaction with medical care, physician training and continuous quality improvement programs should be focusing in part on helping physicians to express empathy and to develop better interpersonal communication and patient education skills.”
