May 20, 2008, Washington, D.C. - The National Center for Assisted Living’s (NCAL) 2008 Assisted Living State Regulatory Review found that in 2007 significantly more states changed their assisted living regulations than in 2006 or 2005.
“During 2007 nearly half of all states made changes to their assisted living regulations or assisted living Medicaid policies as this critical component of the long term care spectrum continued to develop and diversify,” said Karl Polzer, NCAL’s senior policy director and the report’s author.
Analysis of the 2008 report found that more than 20 states made statutory and or regulatory changes affecting assisted living communities and residents, up from about one third of the states in 2006. Of these, about 12 states either overhauled or made significant changes to their assisted living regulations in 2007—many more than in each of the previous two years.
The 230-page report summarizes assisted living regulations across 21 categories, including fire safety and emergency preparedness, in 50 states and the District of Columbia. This is a widely used and free resource to NCAL members, policy makers, and consumers. The report includes important contact information and the Web site information for each state’s oversight agency.
“The state regulatory review is widely used by assisted living professionals, aging organizations, consumers, researchers and policymakers because it is the only resource of its kind published annually,” said David Kyllo, executive director of NCAL. “State regulators and providers eagerly anticipate the release of this report to track development and trends nationwide.”
